Lock the layout or a table

Updated

In short

Click the padlock in the floor plan toolbar to turn on Lock layout. Tables and objects then can't be moved, resized, rotated or deleted, but seating guests still works. To pin just one table, select it and choose Lock in its toolbar. A locked table stays put even when the layout is unlocked.

There are two kinds of lock on the floor plan. Lock layout freezes the whole room so you can seat guests without knocking anything. Locking a single table pins that one table, for example the head table, while you move everything else.

Lock layout: freeze the whole room

Click the padlock (Lock layout) in the toolbar. Click it again to unlock. While it’s on:

  • Tables and objects can’t be moved, resized, rotated or deleted, and there are no resize or rotate handles.
  • The arrow keys and Delete don’t do anything to the room. A short note reminds you the layout is locked.
  • Seating works fully. Drag guests onto chairs, tap an empty chair, use the guest list or run Auto-seat.

While the layout is locked, clicking a table opens its details panel and clicking a guest opens theirs, instead of the small toolbars. It starts off on every device, so you can change the room straight away. Once you lock it, we remember that for the plan on that device.

Lock one table

  1. 1

    Select the table

On the Floor plan screen, click the table. Its toolbar appears above it.
  2. 2

    Choose Lock

Click Lock. To undo it later, select the table again and choose Unlock.

You can also lock a table from its details panel, or on the Table list screen with Table list⋯Lock.

What a locked table does

  • It stays put even when the layout is unlocked. It can’t be dragged, and it has no resize or rotate handles.
  • The arrow keys don’t nudge it, and Align on a neighbouring table never moves it.
  • Auto-arrange leaves it exactly where it is and places the other tables around it.
  • Deleting from the floor plan skips it, whether you press Delete or Backspace. You’ll see a message that the table is locked.

What locking doesn’t do

  • Neither lock stops you seating guests there, or moving guests away.
  • It doesn’t stop you renaming a table or changing its shape and capacity.
  • It doesn’t stop you deleting a table on purpose from the Table list screen. Delete in the table’s ⋯ menu still works, so you’re never stuck with a table. Undo brings it back.

Locking a table vs locking a seat

Locking a table pins where it sits in the room. To stop a guest being moved, lock their seat instead. See lock a guest’s seat.

Good tables to lock

  • The head table or sweetheart table, before you auto-arrange the rest.
  • Tables the venue won’t move, like ones built around a pillar.
  • Any table you’ve lined up perfectly and don’t want to knock with a stray drag.

Frequently asked questions

Why won't my table move?

Either Lock layout is on (click the padlock in the toolbar) or the table is locked on its own (select it and choose Unlock in its toolbar). On a touch screen, press and hold the table for a moment before dragging.

Can I still seat guests while the layout is locked?

Yes. Lock layout only freezes tables and objects. Dragging guests, tapping empty chairs, the guest list and Auto-seat all keep working.

Can I lock a dance floor or other object on its own?

No. Only tables have their own lock. Lock layout freezes objects along with everything else.

Does locking a table stop Auto-Seat?

No. Auto-Seat can still seat guests at a locked table. To keep a table empty, tick Reserved — keep empty in its settings.
