One editor at a time: Request edit and Take control

Updated

In short

Only one person can edit a shared wedding at a time, so changes never collide. Everyone else sees the plan in view-only mode. Editors click Request edit and the current editor clicks Hand over editing. The owner can also click Take control to start editing straight away. If the editor leaves, editing passes on automatically.

Lovely Seating lets one person edit a shared wedding at a time. Everyone else can watch the plan, but their copy is view-only until it’s their turn. It means two people can never move the same guest in different directions, and nobody’s work gets overwritten.

This isn’t live co-editing like Google Docs. Think of it as passing a pen: whoever holds it edits, and anyone else who can edit can ask for it.

Who’s editing right now

When more than one person has the wedding open, a bar appears under the top bar. It shows everyone’s initials, and the person editing has a small pencil badge. It also tells you where you stand:

  • You’re editing: go ahead, your changes save as usual.
  • [Name] is editing: you’re in view-only mode for now.

If you try to change something while someone else is editing, you’ll see: Someone else is editing right now — tap “Request edit” to make changes.

Illustration: one person edits, another asks for a turn, and editing passes over.

Ask for a turn

  1. 1

    Click Request edit

It’s in the bar. The button changes to Request sent…
  2. 2

    The editor hands over

The person editing sees [Your name] wants to edit, with Hand over editing and Not now. Any change they were making is saved first.
  3. 3

    Start editing

Your copy reloads with their latest changes, and the bar says You’re editing.

If they click Not now, nothing changes. Give them a minute, or send them a message, then ask again.

Take control (owner only)

The wedding’s owner also sees Take control. Click it and confirm Take over in the window that asks Take over editing? The person who was editing switches to view-only straight away. Their last change is saved first, so nothing is lost.

Be kind with Take control

It’s there for when someone leaves a tab open and walks away. If they’re actively working, a quick Request edit is friendlier.

Who sees which button

  • Owner: Request edit and Take control.
  • Editor: Request edit only.
  • Viewer: no buttons. Viewers can never edit, so they don’t take turns. See editors and viewers.
  • The person editing: incoming requests, with Hand over editing and Not now.

When the editor leaves

If the person editing closes the wedding or loses their connection, editing passes automatically to the next editor who has it open, the one who arrived first. No one needs to do anything.

Seeing their changes while you wait

A view-only copy checks for new changes about every 20 seconds, and again whenever you come back to the tab. You’ll see the editor’s work appear without reloading.

This applies to your own tabs too

Each browser tab counts as a separate person. If you open the same wedding in two tabs, or on your phone and laptop, only one of them can edit. See working in two tabs or devices.

Frequently asked questions

Can two people edit the seating chart at the same time?

No. One person edits at a time and everyone else watches in view-only mode. This stops changes from colliding or overwriting each other.

Why does it say I'm editing in another tab?

Each tab counts separately. If the bar shows your own name as the editor, you have the wedding open somewhere else. Close that tab, or click Request edit and hand over from the other tab.

What happens to my changes when I hand over editing?

They're saved first. Then your copy switches to view-only and the other person's copy loads the latest version before they start.

Can an editor use Take control?

No, only the wedding's owner can. Editors use Request edit and wait for the current editor to hand over.
