The short answer

PlanSeats is a tidy seating planner that works on a laptop, tablet or phone. Its free Starter plan covers up to 20 guests and 4 tables, and seating rules with auto-assign come with the paid Plus ($8.99/month or $50 once) and Pro ($39.99/month) plans.

Lovely Seating lets you build the whole wedding free, with no guest cap and Auto-Seat included, and charges a one-time $39 only when you want to download exports, publish a QR seat finder or invite collaborators.

What is PlanSeats?

PlanSeats is an online seating chart maker for weddings and other events, from galas and fundraisers to corporate dinners. You paste in your guest list, draw the room with tables, a dance floor and a bar, drag guests onto seats (or let auto-assign fill them on a paid plan) and export a PDF. Its site says it works on a laptop, tablet or phone, and its Pro plan is aimed at planners, venues and coordinators. It’s a well-made tool with clear pricing, so this is a fair comparison rather than a takedown.

How much does PlanSeats cost?

PlanSeats has three tiers. These are the figures on its pricing page when we checked in October 2026; prices change, so confirm on their site before you buy.

PlanSeats pricing (checked October 2026)
Starter (free)
1 event, up to 20 guests and 4 tables. Drag-and-drop seating, guest management, PNG and CSV export.
Plus
$8.99 a month, or $50 once (“Lifetime Plus”). 3 events, unlimited guests and tables, PDF export, bulk CSV import, guest categories and tags, seating rules and auto-assign.
Pro
$39.99 a month. Unlimited events, guests and tables, a multi-event dashboard and priority support.

How that compares with Lovely Seating

Lovely Seating pricing
Free
1 wedding with 1 seating plan, unlimited guests and tables, guest list with RSVPs and meals, CSV import, the floor plan and Auto-Seat. Every export can be previewed with a watermark.
Pro ($39 once)
1 wedding with up to 5 seating plans, print-ready PDF and image exports, place cards, the Find Your Seat guest page and QR code, collaboration and version history. No subscription.
Agency ($79/month)
Unlimited weddings and plans plus white-label exports, for professional planners.

The honest summary: for one wedding over 20 guests, PlanSeats asks you to pay before you can seat everyone, while Lovely Seating lets you build the whole plan free and pay once only to print. If you do pay, our one-time price is lower than Lifetime Plus, though a single month of PlanSeats Plus is cheaper still if you finish within the month. For three events in a year, PlanSeats’ $50 covers more. For a busy planner, PlanSeats Pro is the cheaper monthly plan; Agency costs more and adds white-label exports, a QR guest page and print stationery.

Where PlanSeats falls short

It does the core job well. The gaps show up as soon as a wedding grows past a dinner party:

  • The free plan is very small. Twenty guests and four tables covers an intimate dinner, not most weddings, so you’re likely to pay before you can see your whole room.
  • Automatic seating is paid. Seating rules and auto-assign come with Plus and Pro, so on the free plan every guest is placed by hand.
  • Fewer wedding extras. We couldn’t find a guest QR seat finder, place cards or table numbers on its pricing or home page; exports are PNG, CSV and PDF.
  • General-purpose by design. It serves galas and corporate events as well as weddings, so wedding details such as households, plus-ones and meal choices on the seat get less attention.

The best PlanSeats alternative: a tool made just for seating

PlanSeats and Lovely Seating are both browser tools that work on a phone, and both sell a pay-once option. The difference is what you get before paying, and how much of the wedding the tool understands. With Lovely Seating you can import every guest, draw the room and let Auto-Seat place everyone for free, then pay once if you want the printed stationery and guest QR page.

  • Start from your PlanSeats list. Import the guest list you already built in PlanSeats in one step — no re-typing anyone (more below).
  • A floor plan of your room. The floor plan maker lets you drag and drop your real layout — round, banquet, head and sweetheart tables, plus the dance floor, bar, stage and other venue objects — and seat guests chair by chair.
  • Automatic seating. Tag who must sit together and who to keep apart, and Auto-Seat places your unassigned guests in one click, honouring every rule — locked guests and reserved tables stay put, and one click undoes it.
  • Every guest detail. RSVPs, meals, dietary notes, age and accessibility flags, plus-ones, groups and households — all joined to the seat.
  • Complete exports (Pro). Nine export types in seven themes — a printable floor-plan seating chart, A–Z list, table list, table cards, table numbers, meal directory, place cards, welcome sign and a guest CSV — all from the same plan.
  • A “find your seat” page for guests. Publish a guest page + QR code so guests search their name and see their table — and embed it on your wedding website (Pro).
  • Free to build, no cap on guests. The free plan covers one wedding with unlimited guests and Auto-Seat; a one-time $39 Pro unlocks exports, place cards, the guest QR page and collaboration with your partner or planner — no subscription.
Your room laid out — every guest seated automatically, on any device, in your browser.
When PlanSeats is the right call

If you’re planning a small dinner of 20 or fewer, PlanSeats’ free plan with PNG and CSV export may be all you need. And if you have a wedding plus two other events to seat this year, Lifetime Plus covers all three for $50.

Every guest detail in one place — not a bare name on a chair

PlanSeats adds guest categories and tags on its paid plans. In Lovely Seating every guest carries RSVP, meal choice, dietary notes, age and accessibility flags, side, group, household and plus-one links, on the free plan, and every detail stays joined to the seat, so a late decline or a new +1 updates your plan and your caterer counts at once.

Your guest list, with every field that matters — sortable, filterable, and joined to a seat.

Open any guest and you get the full picture at a glance — no jumping between the guest list and a separate seating canvas.

One guest record: RSVP, meal, dietary needs, plus-one, group and household — all in one panel.

And because meals live on the guest, you get a running count the moment you need it — the exact number your caterer needs, dietary flags included:

A live meal count for the caterer — pulled straight from your guests, dietary flags surfaced.

Still pulling the list together? Lovely Seating keeps every guest in one organised list, and the guest list import brings in an existing spreadsheet or CSV without retyping.

Auto-Seat on the free plan, not just a paid one

PlanSeats does offer seating rules and auto-assign, on Plus and Pro. Lovely Seating includes relationship-aware Auto-Seat on the free plan, for any number of guests. Set your rules once and seat the whole room in a click:

  • Must sit together. A hard rule — couples, families, a guest and their carer always land at the same table.
  • Would prefer together. A soft preference — honoured when there’s room, relaxed when there isn’t.
  • Keep apart. A hard rule — feuding relatives or an ex never share a table, and the reason stays private.
Set the rules once; Auto-Seat fills every table in one click, honouring who sits together and who stays apart.

When a plus-one appears or a late RSVP comes in, you don’t rebuild the room — re-run Auto-Seat and it seats anyone still unassigned into open seats, while guests you’ve already seated stay put. Lock anyone you never want moved, and undo any run in one click. Prefer to place people yourself? You still can, on the same plan — with a warning if you seat someone who’s declined or overfill a table.

Should you switch? An honest take

We’d rather you land in the right place than just sign up. Here’s the honest split:

Stick with PlanSeats if…
  • Your event has 20 guests or fewer and the free plan covers it.
  • You need to seat three events this year and like the $50 Lifetime Plus.
  • You want the room drawn to scale.
  • You plan galas or corporate dinners as well as weddings.
Switch to Lovely Seating if…
  • Your wedding has more than 20 guests and you want to build it all before paying.
  • You want automatic seating without a paid plan.
  • You want a guest QR seat finder, place cards and table numbers from the same plan.
  • You want plus-ones, households, meals and access needs joined to every seat.

How do you move your PlanSeats guest list over?

Export it as a CSV (or copy it from a spreadsheet) and import it into Lovely Seating — it takes minutes and you don’t re-type anyone. It matches the columns for you, links plus-ones, and flags duplicates before anything is added. (It’s a one-time CSV import, not a live sync with other platforms.)

Stuck on a step? The Lovely Seating help center walks through importing a CSV — including one exported from The Knot, Zola or Joy — merging duplicates and adding plus-ones.

Import your PlanSeats CSV — columns matched automatically, duplicates flagged, nothing re-typed.

Frequently asked questions

Is PlanSeats free?+

PlanSeats has a free Starter plan for 1 event with up to 20 guests and 4 tables, including PNG and CSV export. Beyond that you need Plus ($8.99 a month, or $50 once as Lifetime Plus, for 3 events) or Pro ($39.99 a month for unlimited events). Lovely Seating’s free plan has no guest or table cap; downloads are part of a one-time $39 Pro.

What is the best PlanSeats alternative?+

If your guest list is over 20 people and you want to build the whole plan before paying, Lovely Seating is a strong alternative: unlimited guests and relationship-aware Auto-Seat on the free plan, plus a QR seat finder and place cards on the one-time Pro. If you plan several events a year, PlanSeats’ $50 Lifetime Plus covering 3 events may suit you better.

Does PlanSeats seat guests automatically?+

Yes, on its paid plans. PlanSeats lists seating rules and auto-assign on Plus and Pro, so the free Starter plan is drag-and-drop. Lovely Seating includes Auto-Seat on the free plan: it keeps households and must-sit pairs together, keeps keep-apart guests apart, and never moves anyone you’ve already seated.

Is PlanSeats or Lovely Seating cheaper?+

It depends on how many events you plan. For one wedding, Lovely Seating Pro is $39 once and PlanSeats Lifetime Plus is $50 once. For three events, PlanSeats’ $50 covers all three while Lovely Seating Pro covers one wedding (with up to 5 seating plans, for a rehearsal dinner or ceremony too). For planners, PlanSeats Pro is $39.99 a month and Lovely Seating Agency is $79 a month with white-label exports.

Does PlanSeats have a QR code seating chart?+

A guest QR seat finder isn’t listed on PlanSeats’ pricing or home page when we checked in October 2026; it offers PDF exports and a shareable live link. Lovely Seating Pro includes a Find Your Seat page and QR code: guests type their name to see their table, and it updates when you change the seating.

Can I move my guest list from PlanSeats?+

Yes. Export your guests from PlanSeats as a CSV (CSV export is on its free plan) or copy them from your spreadsheet, then import into Lovely Seating. Columns are matched automatically, plus-ones are linked and duplicates are flagged before anything is added. Seating doesn’t carry over, but Auto-Seat can redo the first pass in one click.
