• A real floor plan. Can you lay out your actual room — the right tables, the dance floor, the bar — so it looks like your venue, not just abstract circles? A real layout is the one you can hand your venue or caterer.
• Automatic seating. Does it place guests for you and respect who sits together and apart, or is it all manual drag-and-drop for 150 people?
• Guest details. Does it track RSVPs, meals, dietary needs, access needs, plus-ones and groups — the information your caterer and venue will actually ask you for?
• Real exports. Can you get a print-ready chart guests can read, place cards, a table list and a caterer-friendly export — without a paywall sprung at the finish line?
• Price & platform. One-time or subscription, and does it run in a browser on any device — or is it phone-only or a desktop install?

The honest limitation: Lovely Seating is deliberately a seating tool, not an all-in-one suite — it doesn’t build you a wedding website or collect RSVPs from guests. If you want those, pair it with a free platform for the website and use Lovely Seating for the part they’re weakest at: the actual seating.

Best for: couples already using Zola’s free website and registry who want a visual chart in the same place. Zola’s seating tool is the strongest among the big all-in-ones — a genuine drag-and-drop layout with tables and areas you can move, and guests you drag from your Zola list. The catches: it’s iOS-only, free only up to 15 guests (premium after), the layout is fairly basic, and there’s no automatic seating — every guest is placed by hand. Exports to PDF or Excel.

Best for: couples who want a free, web-based chart tied to a free guest list. WeddingWire’s seating planner is fully free, works in a browser, and auto-syncs with its guest list, so attending guests pull straight in. It’s a solid manual drag-and-drop tool — but the tables are basic, and there’s no auto-seating. Often recommended over The Knot’s seating tool, even by The Knot’s own users.

Best for: couples already deep in The Knot’s website, registry and guest list. Its guest-list manager is excellent and free — but the seating piece is its weak spot: reviewers and its own forums describe a basic, list-style table assignment rather than a real drag-the-tables floor plan, with no auto-seating. Many couples end up exporting to a spreadsheet or a dedicated tool for the actual seating.

Best for: couples who want the best free wedding website and RSVP experience. Joy is polished and genuinely free (websites, RSVP, registry). But seating is a light add-on at most — no real floor plan and no auto-seating, and you reassign manually when a guest declines. Great for the website; you’ll want a dedicated tool for the seating.

Best for: people happy to install software who want powerful automatic seating. PerfectTablePlan genuinely auto-assigns guests using proximity rules (sit near / sit apart) and imports from spreadsheets, with a cheap one-time licence (from ~$30). The trade-offs: it’s a Mac/Windows install (no browser, no phone), it feels dated next to modern web apps, and sharing is weaker. The unlicensed trial caps at 30 guests.

Best for: couples who specifically want one-click seating and don’t need a real room layout. A cluster of newer web/mobile apps market rules-based or “AI” seating (together/apart, group tags). They can be genuinely useful, but most are a schematic guest-to-table assignment rather than a real floor plan, guest details are thin, and several are subscriptions or charge to export. Worth a look if auto-seating is your only need; check whether you also want a real room layout, rich guest fields and a one-time price before committing.

Best for: designing a beautiful seating sign, once you already know who sits where. Canva has gorgeous, free seating-chart templates — but it’s a graphic-design tool with no guest list and no seating logic. You type names into a layout by hand. Best for: venues, hotels and professional planners. Both offer powerful, truly room-accurate 2D/3D floor plans with huge venue libraries. But they’re B2B tools — sales-demo or subscription pricing (roughly $50–320/mo), export often paywalled, and far more than a couple planning one wedding needs. (Prismm, formerly AllSeated, has also been absorbed by Cvent and is winding down its standalone product.)

Best for: a quick, free, manual chart with no account. A long tail of small web makers — SeatPlan.io, SeatCanvas, Pix, Wedibox and more — let you drag tables and guests and export, often free or for a small one-time fee. They’re handy and cheap, but nearly all are manual only (no auto-seating), with basic layouts and thin guest details. Fine for small, simple weddings.

Match the tool to your situation:

• Big guest list or tricky family dynamics? You want auto-seating — Lovely Seating (web) or PerfectTablePlan (desktop).
• Want a plan your venue and caterer can use? You want a real floor plan plus meal/dietary details — Lovely Seating, or a venue tool if you’re a planner.
• Already built your list in Zola/Knot/Joy? Try their built-in tool first; move to a dedicated one if the seating feels clunky.
