Add a +1 and how plus-ones are seated

Updated

In short

Open the ⋯ menu on a guest's row and choose Add a +1. The +1 starts with the host's RSVP, group, household and side, shows as “Anna +1” until named, and follows the host's RSVP changes unless you set it differently. Auto-Seat always seats a plus-one with their guest. Each guest can have one.

A plus-one in Lovely Seating is a real guest, linked to the person who’s bringing them. They take a seat, can have a meal, and are counted for your caterer. You don’t need to know their name yet.

Add a +1

  1. 1

    Find the host

In Guests, find the guest who’s bringing someone.
  2. 2

    Choose Add a +1

Click ⋯ at the end of their row and choose Add a +1. You’ll see “Plus-one added”.
  3. 3

    Name them (or don’t)

The new guest’s details open straight away. Type their name and click Save, or just close the panel. Until you name them, they show as the host’s first name plus “+1”, like “Anna +1”.

Add a +1 only appears for guests who don’t already have a plus-one or a linked partner. Each guest can have one.

What a plus-one gets from their host

A new plus-one starts with the host’s RSVP, Group, household and side. After that you can give them their own meal, age or dietary notes.

The plus-one’s RSVP follows the host

When you change the host’s RSVP, the plus-one’s RSVP changes with it, as long as the two still matched. If you gave the plus-one a different answer on purpose (say the host is Attending but their +1 Declined), it’s left alone. Changing the plus-one’s RSVP never changes the host’s. See track RSVP status.

Spotting plus-ones in your list

  • The plus-one shows a small chip like +1 of Anna.
  • The host shows a +1 chip. Hover over it to see who their plus-one is.
  • On the floor plan, a plus-one’s chair is marked with a “+1” badge.

How plus-ones are seated

  • Auto-Seat always seats a plus-one at the same table as their guest. See how Auto-Seat works.
  • When you seat people yourself, moving the host doesn’t move the plus-one. Seat them both. If they end up at different tables, the Overview health check flags it.
  • Like every guest, a plus-one only takes a seat if they’re not Declined.

If both people are already on your list, open the guest who is the plus-one, click More details, and choose their host under Plus-one of. The link works both ways. Choose No one to unlink them.

For couples, a household is often better

Plus-one of marks one person as the other’s +1. For a couple who were both invited by name, put them in a household instead. See households and couples.

Plus-ones when you import

In the Paste a list tab of GuestsImport, write “+ Guest” after a name, like “Emily Brown + Guest”. Emily is added with a linked plus-one. A trailing “+1”, “+” or “& Guest” works too. The same works in a CSV name column. If a plus-one already has their own row, link them afterwards with Plus-one of. See import a CSV or paste a list.

Removing a plus-one

Delete the plus-one like any guest: ⋯Delete. The host stays on your list. Deleting the host doesn’t delete their plus-one, so delete both if neither is coming. Deciding who gets a plus-one in the first place? Our guest list guide can help.

Frequently asked questions

Do I need to know the plus-one's name?

No. An unnamed plus-one shows as the host's first name plus “+1” (for example “Anna +1”). Add the name whenever you find out.

Can a guest have more than one plus-one?

No, the link is one to one. For a guest bringing several people, add them as guests and put everyone in one household.

Will Auto-Seat split a guest from their plus-one?

No. Auto-Seat always places a plus-one at the same table as their guest. If you move one of them by hand, move the other too.

Does a plus-one count toward meals and headcount?

Yes. A plus-one is a full guest, so they count in your meal, age and headcount totals unless they're marked Declined.
